PCG Health Polska introduces social prescribing to Poland
2017-09-14

Old age is not a disease. Yet the elderly use healthcare at a disproportionate rate as compared to younger populations. Social prescribing can be one of the answers to healthcare overutilization by some patients groups. It is a means of enabling physicians and other primary care professionals to refer people to a range of local, non-clinical services, such as senior clubs, peer support groups for individuals with long term conditions, sports, arts or other leisure activities.

“Prescription for Life” is a motto of the newest initiative of the health team in Poland, which will see social prescribing introduced in this country for the very first time. The project concept submitted by  our team was chosen as one of the best ideas for social innovation for the elderly (scoring higher than 139 other participants). As a result, PCG was invited to join a social innovations incubator, where the team has been working with experts to further develop, test and implement the idea (with best projects receiving implementation grants). The concept will be tested locally in cooperation with local authorities and institutions in Konstantynów Łódzki. Currently we are working on a prototype, project specification and ex-ante research design. The testing phase – supported by grants – is to be launched in March 2018.
